Travel Trailer Information
View Towables For Sale Travel trailers, fifth wheels, popup campers, and truck campers are great alternatives to traditional motor homes and provide plenty of room and comfort for your camping trip.
At the upper end of the tow behind camper spectrum are fifth wheel trailers. These campers provide everything you might need in terms of necessity and comfort while on your camping trip. Truck campers, on the other hand, provide compact, yet cozy living quarters for those looking for a little less in the way of amenities and cost.
Which RV you will need depends on a number of factors including how large your camping party is, what your vehicle is rated to tow, and what your budget looks like.
Towing Your RV
Depending on what type of RV you choose, not just any towing vehicle will do. With any towing vehicle, it is important that you know the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), which is how much your vehicle weight fully loaded with fluids, cargo, passengers, etc. Once you have the GVW of your truck or other towing vehicle, you subtract it from the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). The GVWR is the maximum amount of weight permitted for your vehicle. When you determine the value of the GVW subtracted from the GVWR, you have the Maximum Trailer Weight- the heaviest trailer that your towing vehicle can handle.
GVWR – GVW = Maximum Trailer Weight
In general, it is best to choose a towing vehicle with a towing capacity that is higher than the weight you will be towing. You don’t want your vehicle to be stretched to its maximum, because that can increase your need for frequent maintenance, or worse, decrease the safety of your vehicle.
For Fifth Wheels, you need at least a ¾ ton truck to do the job. A heavy-duty truck with a towing package and diesel engine is the absolute best option for Fifth Wheel owners. With smaller towables, like a Pop-Up Camper or small Travel Trailer, an SUV, minivan, or car could possibly work, depending on the amount of additional amenities and weight of the items in storage. Check with your America Choice RV representative for the best options for your current vehicle.
Weight is not the only issue when considering the best towing vehicle for your needs.
Frame: There are two types of frames on towing vehicles: full-frame and unit body. Full-frame vehicles and trucks have the tow hitch attached directly to the frame, which provides more stability and less strain on the vehicle, especially with heavy loads. Unit-body vehicles have a body that shares its load with the chassis. They have the tow hitch attached to the bumper or body which can put a great deal of strain on the vehicle with a heavy load. As a rule:
• Full-frame- better for heavy, frequent towing
• Unit-body- better for lighter, occasional towing
Drive Train: Because of its better traction and ability to stabilize large loads, rear-wheel drive is a better towing option than front-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive should never be used for towing, unless you are in an emergency situation. All-wheel drive can be iffy, and you should check the towing capacity with the manufacturer. Some newer systems adjust specifically for towing, but older vehicles do not.
Engine: For towing, torque is more important than horsepower. A diesel engine has more torque than a gas engine, making it the best option for towing. Typically, the diesel engine provides better economy with heavier loads than gas engines, and maintains its power at high altitudes. Typically, diesel engines need less maintenance and last longer than their gas counterparts.
Towing Package: It is always a good idea to get a towing vehicle with a towing package. This provides an oil cooler, transmission fluid cooler, a heavy duty alternator and battery, high capacity rear springs, and maybe even a stability bar. You can add these things to your towing vehicle if you already have one. Check with America Choice RV for the proper RV towing vehicle or available RV towing trucks.

Fifth Wheels provide the most living space of any RV, and are a true home on wheels. There is no “roughing it” in a Fifth Wheel. You will never be cramped or uncomfortable in this RV. They have been called “Yachts on Land.”
If you are an outdoor enthusiast, entrepreneur, craftsman, or hobbyist that likes to take their interests on the road, the Toy Hauler is probably the best RV for you. There are several varieties of Toy Haulers depending on your personal needs.
The Pop-Up, also known as the Tent Camper or Folding Camper, is a small box trailer that, when closed, measures only 8 to 14 feet. When expanded, they are basically a very high-tech, sturdy, elevated tent.
Truck Campers are RVs that sit inside the bed of a pickup truck. The Truck Camper becomes a part of the truck, it can go almost anywhere a truck can go. For this reason, Truck Campers are considered the most versatile of RVs.
Travel trailers, fifth wheels, popup campers, and truck campers all offer great alternatives for camping and vacationing to traditional motor homes. They each can provide luxury accommodations and provide ample room for you and your family while allowing you to bring your personal vehicle along.
There are a multitude of options for travel trailers and other tow behind campers. The one you need will depend on your needs and budgetary constraints. For smaller accommodations, truck campers may service your needs adequately. However, for larger parties, a fifth wheel offers the best in comfort and luxury.
There are additional considerations to think about when choosing a travel trailer. For instance, larger tow behind vehicles will require the use of a larger capacity tow vehicle. Hitch placement is also a consideration. The friendly staff at America Choice RV can help you find the right trailer at the right price and can even help you arrange financing.
